1. The Project of the Motoglider AC-5M

AC-5M - is a single-seater motorglider equipped with a retractable power unit, providing independent takeoff and giving enough height where, after retraction of the engine, a soaring flight might be continuing just as the way on a traditional sailplane.

The -5 design project has started in 1998.The AC-5M was designed to meet JAR-22 standards. The pilot model AC-5m has been designed as a result of a deep converting of the AC4 airframe. In this way 35 copies of motor-gliders AC-5m have been made. The given series almost entirely has been sold in America: 10 motogladers AC-5m have been sold in England, 2 in Canada, on one in Greece, Holland and New Zealand, and all the others in the USA. One motor-glider is sold in Russia. Certificates on AC-5M as Experimental the USA and England are received.

Fuselage of type Monocoque, and as all control airfoils are made of fiber glass fabric, foam plastics and an epoxy resin. The spacious cabin of a glider allows to big stature pilots up to 6.5ft to have a placement quite perfectly. The safety-designed cockpit includes both rudder pedal adjustment and fully adjustable seat back in conformity with any stature of a pilot.

The cockpit canopy gives to a pilot the full review of outside world within the limits of corners not less than 300 degrees: at the left-upwards-to the right. The windshield of the canopy is fixed, and the aft portion of the canopy hinges to the right. Emergency canopy jettison is easily accomplished by pulling two red release handles on the canopy bottom rail.

The compact instrument panel has enough free space for accommodation of the standard complete set of flight-navigation devices. The custom-made configuration, including an electronic variometer or other devices is possible. The standard 4 dot fastened system is applied. A TE system and a long-range VHF radio antenna located in the vertical tail. The space aft of the pilot's seat can be customized to accept an oxygen system, battery, and barograph when installed with proper weight and balance precautions.

Wing of the glider has a view plane of a trapezoidal form, also big aspect ratio 20.6, FX60-157 laminar wing section with high value of the maximal lift is applied. The wing of the glider is constructed from the facilitated multilayered composite, on modern technology in precision matrixes with use of solidification in vacuum. A producing of all composite elements includes their heat treatment at temperature of 70 degrees of Celsius within 16 hours.

The wing has a span of 12.6 m and consisted of 2 detachable parts (the left and right consoles) with completely automatic control connections and can be easily demounted for transportation or storage. On a top surface of the wing the divebrakes (interceptors) of a sliding design executed under the conventional scheme Schempp-Hirth are placed.

On this motoglider a traditional manual controlling is applied. The driver of the ailerons, elevator and interceptors - all of it has been designed using on the push-pull rods; the driver of the rudder - using on the steel cable links. There no flaps on the wing. All the driver's components are readily available for survey and repair.

The powered glider 5M has inherited from glider AC highly manoeuvrable properties: bank switching time responce (45 degr, V=90 km/h) takes 5 sec.
    The engine two-stroke, single-cylinder, air cooling system, can be established in one of two versions: the carburetors or injection system with an electrical ignition type.
    The engine compartment is situated in central section of the fuselage behind the assembly of docking wings. In the compartment the power plant was fastened to the hoisting mechanism of the engine block that has been mounted on the main frame of the fuselage.

A pilot of AC5m produces extension (or retraction) of the engine by manually, using a control lever disposed on a starboard. A required moving force to this lever is very small owing to use of the mechanical balance device on air damper. Before rising up the engine, first you must open the compartment doors, and then to produce extension and locking up of the hoisting mechanism. The essential condition of the reliable locking of the mechanism is full closing of the compartment doors.

Landing gear: the AC-5M model has a retractable main wheel. A tube supplied 310 mm balloon tire does an adequate job of shock absorption, and the 220 mm tail wheel provides arrow-straight tracking on rollout. The main wheel utilizes sealed bearings and houses a cable actuated drum brake.
